The 240-8110 Net Radiometer is an instrument that directly and instantly measures net radiation (the difference between incident and reflected radiation) in the short and long wavelength ranges. The receiver plate facing up measures shortwave global radiation and longwave radiation emitted by the atmosphere. The downward-facing receiver plate measures reflected shortwave and longwave radiation according to the temperature emitted by the surface beneath the sensor. The two receiver plates are electrically cross-connected, enabling direct determination of net radiation.
A positive value means radiation flux is directed toward the reference surface, while a negative value means radiation flux is directed away from the reference surface. Therefore, when positive values are measured, the reference surface is gaining radiant energy. When negative values are measured, the surface loses energy through long-wave radiation.
The instrument consists of a sensor, a desiccant (silica gel) container, and a 400-mm (16-in.) support arm. The sensing element consists of sixteen Cu-CuNi thermocouples covered by two circular blackened copper plates (receiver plates), which are protected by two Lupolen domes. Watertight sealing is achieved with two fixing rings and O-rings. Two bull's-eye levels allow for horizontal adjustment. The silica gel container is located at the front of the case.
