255-205 & 255-210 Stillwells

Stillwells are made from passivated stainless steel. The vertical tube is supported by a triangular base with levelling screws at each corner. It is placed in the evaporation pan to support a fixed point or hook gauge. The Stillwell (also known as a Stilling Well) makes readings more precise by eliminating surges and ripples in the water level caused by wind.

The 255-205 Stillwell is placed in the evaporation pan to support a hook gauge. Two small openings located opposite each other near the base permit the flow of water in and out of the well. Used with 255-214 (imperial) or 255-215 (metric) Hook Gauges.

The 255-210 Stillwell with Fixed Point features a pointed rod centered inside the base of the stillwell. When in position, the tip of the rod is approximately 7.5 inches above the bottom of the evaporation pan. There are two small openings located opposite each other near the base that permit the flow of water in and out of the well. Water is added to the evaporation pan until the water level reaches the tip of the rod. After a day of evaporation, the water level will be below the tip. A 255-211 Replacement Graduate is then used to measure water into the evaporation pan until the water level reaches the tip of the rod. The amount of water required to refill the evaporation pan provides an indication of the day's evaporation.
